Dr. H.S. Adenwalla has been at the Jubilee Mission Hospital for the last 55 Yrs. He started of attending to a large varies of general surgical patients and then over the past three decades, has been concentrating on the care of cleft lip and palate patients alone. A total of over 16.000 cleft surgeries have been performed in this unit so far. The emphasis has been on quality care. 


The centre was initially supported by organisations like the Simavi, Rotary club of Dokkum, and the Soroptomisten club all in the Netherlands. Since the year 2000, this centre has been a partner with Smile Train, New York. It was the first center in India that joined forces with them.

During your fellowship there you will be exposed to the complete range of cleft surgery: 

  • Primary cleft lip and palate repair

  • Pharyngoplasty

  • Alveolar bone grafts

  • Orthognatic surgery

  • Secondary cleft lip correction

  • Cleft rhinoplasty (at pre-school age and in adults)

On an average 70-80 surgical procedures are performed in 1 month.

The centre is a tertiary referred centre for cleft lip and palate patients from all over Kerala, and indeed 

over most of South India. Training surgeons in cleft care has always been its interest with observer trainees coming from all over India and also abroad- Africa, Europe and the USA.


Thrissur is the cultural capital of Kerala. It has lush greenery. It is famous for the Pooram festival with 30 elephants participating in the month of April/May every year with an exhibition of many colourful and unique umbrellas.


  1. Accommodation

There is no hospital accommodation available, but there is a lodge just opposite the hospital that is decent and used by most visitors to the Centre:

            Non A/c single room     Rs.350 per day


For those requiring more comfort we recommend the Hotel Casino, which is a 15 min. drive from the hospital. It charges Rs. 2600 per day for an airconditioned room.

III. Transportation

Travelling to Thrissur is recommend via Nedumbassery airport which is located in Kochi, an old colonial town on the coast of Kerela. Transport from there to Thrissur is by prepaid taxis, that are available from the airport. You can buy a ticket at the booth in the arrivals hall, on the right just before you leave the airport lounge. The prepaid taxi’s charge Rs.1400 and take about one hour to get to Thrissur.


Local transport is by autorickshaws, which charge by the meter. They are a very cheap and convenient way of getting around.
